Blackbird Window & Door LLC is a Colorado based company which is rooted in the belief that windows (and glass doors) are the single most important elements in fine architectural design. Windows are the intermediary between the indoors and outdoors, and have the potential to uplift the human spirit. Choosing the right window brand is an important start, but getting the myriad of details correctly designed and ordered can be overwhelming. Blackbird is here to help!
With over 90 years of combined experience in the architectural and construction industries, and 25 years specifying and detailing windows, the team at Blackbird has the knowledge base and the passion to help you get it right the first time.
Meet the Founders
Bert Middleton has devoted his life for the past 25 years to bringing best-fit fenestration solutions to the architects and general contractors who are creating the most stunning high-end custom homes in the Rocky Mountains. Bert has represented every major brand of window in America over the course of his career, and also several brands of European windows. With this level of industry cross-training, Bert is in a unique position to bring practical suggestions to his clients for how best to accomplish their professional goals. Bert’s devoted repeat customers will be the first to tell you that (a) Bert is a man who does what he says he’s going to do, and (b) does not shy away when the going gets tough. Bert is your go-to window partner from start to finish to make sure the windows in your projects are a source of pride and joy for you and your clients.
Sharon Porter brings a depth of knowledge and breath of multidisciplinary experience to the Blackbird team. As a licensed architect of 30 years, having worked primarily with high-end residential clients, Sharon honed the skills of manifesting architectural vision and solving problems with creative flair. Sharon also owned and operated a design-build company for several years, wherein she filled the role of general contractor. Being a GC gave Sharon a strong focus on practicality — she knows the importance of selecting/specifying window systems which will stand the test of time. Sharon’s past architectural and design-build customers will tell you that Sharon has a personal commitment to excellence that far exceeds expectations. Being very detail oriented by nature, Sharon is tireless in her pursuit of thoroughness, for the purpose of wanting the outcomes of her work efforts to flow forward as efficiently as possible and shine with delight.

Sun Glass was founded in Farmington, New Mexico by N.L. Garrett Sr. in 1952. The business was then purchased by Cliff Freeman and James Newlun in 1999. Then in the fall of 2008 Cliff Freeman (father) and Clint Freeman (son) purchased James Newlun’s shares of the business making it a true family owned and operated business.
In the winter of 2014, Sun Glass added a retail location in Durango, Colorado by purchasing another local historical business from Michael and Janet Kuss, Durango Glass, which was also founded in 1952.
Then in 2018, Sun Glass brought both Lonnie’s Glass and Auto Glass Wizard into the family giving Sun Glass a brick & mortar presence in Cortez, Colorado. Lonnie’s Glass was been founded in 1964 and run by the Lonnie Elliott and subsequently run by his son Heath Elliott who purchased the business in 2009. After the purchase, Heath stayed with the company and now works for the Sun Glass Durango branch. Auto Glass Wizard was founded in 2013 by Andy and Kristyn Spruell after Andy had begun his glass career with Lonnie’s Glass. Andy and Kristy both stayed with Sun Glass initially with Andy running the Cortez branch and Kristyn in a CSR role. Today Andy operates as the companies VP of Operation and Kristyn handles retrofit window & door sales for the Cortez branch.
Most recently, through acquisition Pagosa Glass came into the Sun Glass family in the summer of 2021 adding a physical location in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Pagosa Glass was founded back in 1976 by Bob and Eula Black. Their granddaughter and her husband, Stacia and Matt Aragon, then acquired and began operating the business in 1998.
Sun Glass business has enjoyed a great long-term relationship with the entire Four Corner’s Region. As the community and region has grown, Sun Glass has also grown to be the largest glass shop in the Four Corners Region. Through each of these physical locations we see to be involved and care for these communities.
Meet the Installers
James Wignall is the lead installer for Blackbird Window and Door. With his team of a dozen skilled technicians, and a bevy of specialized glass installation equipment, James has accomplished installation of complex large glass systems at difficult terrain jobsites on some of the most exclusive homes in the Rockies. James holds window and door installation certificates from Reynaers Belgium for their most exacting products, and he also is trained and experienced in installations following the standards of AAMA, ASTM, and FGIA.
